In Bangladesh only a handful mobile phone users have so far adopted 4G technology since its launch in February 2018 due to the slower response from operators in bringing all areas under the coverage of the 4G network. The government had gone for a trial run of 5G mobile technology, which has caused the mobile users to raise an eyebrow, as its predecessor 4G network is yet to cover most of the areas of Bangladesh. According to the telecommunication experts 5G will dramatically increase the internet speed, offering a boost to self-driving cars, drones, virtual reality and the other technologies connected with the internet. But these types of fancy technologies are not available in Bangladesh. CEO of a Mobile service provider company recently stated that “The 5G network will realize networks capable of providing zero-distance connectivity between people and connected machines. It will enhance all aspects of people’s life that are already influenced by the use of digital technology,” It is clear that Bangladesh will be introduced with 5G network soon. But in recent time hundreds of Birds fall from the sky and died while network service provider company tested 5G network in Netherland and Rome. This incident raised a question in our mind which is “Is the 5G network is safe for the Environment?”
5G will include the higher millimeter wave (MMW) frequencies never before used for Internet and Telecommunications technology. These waves do not travel as easily through buildings as the lower frequencies, so according to the original marketing scheme, 5G would require millions of new so-called “small cells” a.k.a. Wireless Telecommunications Facilities. 5G “small cell” antennas need to be placed in neighborhoods everywhere in Street lights, Trashcans, Utility poles, Bus stops and in Sides of buildings. The radiation from these small cells are not small. Wireless antennas emit microwaves non-ionizing radio frequency radiation and essentially function as cell towers. Each installation can have over a thousand antennas that are transmitting simultaneously. Examples of how small cells are not small include:
- They increase electromagnetic radiation near homes.
- They have refrigerator-sized (and larger) equipment cabinets.
- Property values drop after a cell tower is built near homes.
- Taller and wider poles are needed for the antennas.
- Fixtures weigh hundreds of pounds.
Wireless radiation is harmful for human health. A scientific research was published saying that Wireless radiation from the 5G network setup alters sleep patterns in replicated research in both animals and humans. For example, an animal study found an hour of exposure to Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR) caused a one-hour delay for rats to drift into Rapid Eye Movement (REM) or deep sleep. Human studies have found exposure reduces REM sleep, alters the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal and results in altered performance.
Published research also finds the frequencies impact wildlife. For example, studies have found that the radiation alter bird navigation and disturb honeybee colonies. Research also shows impacts on trees and plant.
Physicists found that the higher millimeter frequencies intended for 5G use are preferentially absorbed into the sweat duct at much higher rates than other organ tissues.
Darius Lozinski Professor at the university of Helsinki said “we don’t have slightest idea how human skin responds Radio Frequency (RF) and Electromotive Force (EMF) not at all starting from GSM (Global System for Mobile) we have only one study but 5G technology this spectrum energy will be deposited solely in the skin so meaning that skin will take all absorption all other organs will be not really absorbed or affected or unless indirectly from response within the skin.” In recent days back in December 2018, Hundreds of birds fall from the sky during 5G test in the Netherlands and it’s just what it says they were testing 5G and 150 birds fell from the sky this has also happened in Utah in Rome and other places. Because of this incident 5G network radiation now is a matter of concern among the people of developed countries.
In 2017, when 5G “small cells” were coming to California via a 5G streamlining bill (SB649), firefighter organizations came out in strong opposition to the bill and cited the many peer-reviewed studies. They requested that 5G towers not be installed on firehouses. They were successful and SB649 was amended to exempt their stations from the deployment due to their health concerns.
I personally think Bangladesh government should take more time to introduce 5G network in Bangladesh as many researchers claimed that 5G network has harmful effect on Human and Animal life. At the end I would like to make some recommendation to protect public health from the negative impact of 5G network.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO PROTECT PUBLIC HEALTH
- Do not proceed to roll out 5G technologies pending pre-market studies on health effects.
- Re-evaluate safety standards based on long term as well as short term studies on biological effects.
- Introducing law which pre-empts state and local government regulation for the placement, construction, and modification of personal wireless service facilities on the basis of the environmental effects.
- Create an independent multidisciplinary scientific agency tasked with developing appropriate safety regulations, premarket testing and research needs in a transparent environment with public input.
- Label pertinent Electromotive Force (EMF) information on devices along with appropriate precautionary warnings.
